How To Create A Larger Looking Home

Sometimes we have to get creative when it comes to extra space and storage in our homes, especially if it is lacking in the square footage department. Built in storage can hide away those extra items, that make your space look crowded. You might be surprised to learn that you can make your home look larger than it is with a few simple tricks.

Most of us do not have the ability to start renovating or taking out walls to make extra space. The good thing is you might not need to, it can be as simple as changing out your window treatments to give the illusion that there is more space. The right blinds or shades can make your home or office appear larger.

Be careful with window treatments that have large patterns, although they are beautiful, their design can make your space feel smaller.

Also try and avoid shades that are too dark in color or fabrics that are too thick, they will give the appearance that your home is smaller than it is. Instead choose light sheers or drapes, to allow the natural light to give the illusion of a more open concept. White or even off-white materials will help open things up and usher in feelings of calmness with the inviting amount of extra natural light.

Wood blinds (real or faux wood), or roller shades are also a great option. They will add something special to your space without making the room feel crowed.

Another great way to make your home feel larger is to place mirrors that face your window. Since our eyes are drawn to light, this will give the perception that the space is larger.

The direction your window treatments are going is important as well. If you have lower ceilings, add vertical blinds to help your ceiling to appear higher. The closer your vertical blinds are to the ceiling the more your eyes will be drawn upwards, this will create the illusion of openness.

You can also choose to mount your window treatments to the outside of your window frame. This will create a sense that there is more square footage then there actually is. When the edges of the treatments overlap the frame, it will appear that your window is much larger.

Lastly, try and keep the space around your windows uncluttered. I know this can be a real struggle for some of us plant lovers, but it is necessary for a clean look. Keeping the unobstructed light from the windows and allowing all the natural light to come in, will dramatically increase the perception of the size of your home.

Well, I hope these tips are helpful when creating a more open concept in your space. Don’t forget to come back next week for more Tuesday tips and stop by our social media and say hi! Until next time!
